Confirm the period and due date
The FTA states that registered businesses must file VAT returns and make related payments within 28 days after the end of their tax period. Check the period and due date shown in EmaraTax, and plan time for review and payment.
Create a complete transaction file
Gather sales and purchase records, credit notes, import documents and relevant adjustments for the period. Reconcile the underlying records to the ledger. Highlight missing documents and transactions that require review rather than assuming the treatment from the bank description.
Separate collection from tax decisions
Having an invoice does not by itself establish that all VAT is recoverable. Flag uncertain items for a review of the supporting evidence and applicable rules. Keep a clear explanation of the treatment selected for unusual transactions.
Build a review trail
Use a working file that links the return figures back to the accounts and supporting schedules. Record corrections, review notes and approvals. This makes it easier to understand the final numbers and answer questions later.
Treat filing and payment as separate steps
Before completing the period, confirm both the submission and any payment due. Save the submission acknowledgement and payment evidence with the working file. Start your next period with an up-to-date list of unresolved documentation issues.
